I thought you were a derivative, super-lame version of Minus the Bear or something. My knowledge of your song catalogue extended as far as that commercial for Lexus-brand automobiles. But then I heard you perform live on NPR’s Sound Opinions and I was a convert. I don’t know why I resisted you for so long. Maybe it was your (now admittedly deserved) explosion in popularity. Or maybe it was the way you sang your songs or the production, I don’t know. Regardless, I didn’t appreciate how effortless you make these pop gems sound. I have seen the error of my ways; and I’m sorry. Can we be friends?</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">~Love, </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> Ignorant Fan Guy</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Now, the above is something I would write to Phoenix if I were the type of person to actually write letters to bands. Fortunately for them, I prefer instead to post about my feelings on the internet. But that letter could have been written by anyone, just replace the key pro-nouns and adjectives and you would have a fairly accurate representation of what I call repentant band bias. For one reason or another, people resist liking bands or certain types of music. These reasons can be as simple as “Band-X is too popular” or as complex as “I don’t listen to that type of music because it postulates a lifestyle that I don’t necessarily identify with”. The range of these reasons are all rooted in the same trait: stubborn immutability. An idea is planted, and then, over time, it becomes so firmly entrenched that it is difficult to change; opinions even more so. And while this is certainly the explanation for not just music bias, but most biases in general, it would be outside the scope of this post to address those larger, societal issues. Regardless, as one who devotes an inordinate amount of time to music appreciation, it is striking to take a step back and realize one’s own biases. The intrinsic problem with being a critic is that the entire practice is based upon a culture of biases. It is the reason we can justify our tastes, our ideas, and our critiques. I didn’t like Phoenix because they were too popular and they had a male lead singer. Thus, it was the embarrassment of saying “Wow, these guys are really good,” and having everyone I know respond “We know, we knew a year ago,” to make me rethink my own approach to music. It wasn’t until I heard them play live did I realize the error of my ways. My biases had blinded me from truly hearing the amazing pop gems that Phoenix produces. They had served me well in the past but maybe they were too stringent. I had fashioned myself as the pastor at the pulpit only to realize that I was as guilty as any of the sinners I had been preaching to. Thus, it is with a stern warning that I must end this post: though biases are important in filtering out the junk, sometimes it would behoove the intelligent listener to relax their standards in order to experience a wider range of (occasionally) brilliant music.</span></span></p>Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17140558928882784345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630633191671731243.post-79517537094157375142010-07-15T07:40:00.000-07:002010-07-15T07:44:57.097-07:00Phantogram<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://alloveralbany.com/images/phantogram_rev_hall.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 525px; height: 394px;" src="http://alloveralbany.com/images/phantogram_rev_hall.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><div><i>Phantogram</i> come from Saratoga Springs, a small town in Upstate New York, but their sound is more synonymous with the frenetic streets of New York City. The album starts out with Pedals which is a nice, somewhat mellow opening to the album and smoothly eases you into the next tune, Brittany's Back. At first I was slightly nervous when I heard the almost latin intro, but seconds in I was calling myself an idiot for underestimating Stuart McLamb's genius song writing abilities as this song is quickly becoming my favorite on the album.</div><div><br /></div><div><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825268&style=metal&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825268&style=metal&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></div><div><br /></div><div>The album maintains a rhythm of speeding up and down but really picks back up when it comes around to Heart To Tell. Now if you're waiting for a song as catchy and uplifting as Sparxxx here it is. The melodies being sung in Heart To Tell accompany the chord progression so flawlessly it's nearly impossible to not fall in love with this one and it's luckily followed by Anthrophobia. This song then starts out a little slow and then quickly picks up leaving you in a bedlam; crashing symbols, raging guitar triplets, and wailing oo's and ahh's over it all, making it an extremely nice addition to the album. Next comes Horophones with a progression similar to "Young Folks" by<i>Peter Bjorn and John.</i> You can't go wrong with that. Then there is Wilmount; another melodic slow piece. The Album then finishes out with This Room. Now I was expecting some big thrilling upbeat closer and felt a tinge of disappointment when I detected the tempo, but I then quickly refuted the thought. I'm a sucker for vocal melodies, and if there is a song on the album that showcases this bands ability to do so, This Room is it. It really is a perfect end to the LP with a bitter sweet feel; sadness for the journey through the library has ended, but elation as well for having had a good time while listening.</div><div><br /></div><div><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825273&style=metal&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825273&style=metal&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></div><div><br /></div><div><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825226&style=metal&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21825226&style=metal&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></div><div><br /></div><div>Overall I think <i>Libraries</i> is definitely a top album of 2010. I came across them the other day and after listening to Anna Mae I had to put it up. Coronation Thieves is a great album that takes you on an adventure starting with influences from bands like <i>Clash</i> and ending with the feel of a very mellow splash of <i>TVotR</i>. In many ways, they embody the way music should be played; loud, slightly out of control, and full of quirky memories and obsessions. Their first EP, <i>Lesson in Crime</i> came out in 2006 and although short at about 18 minutes, showcased their unique and completely unfettered pop punk grooves. The foursome's newest album, <i>Champ</i> was released in June and features a more developed sound but with many of the same themes and plenty of rage. It's chillwave vibe strikes me as being fresh and suave and is a nice listen, and the fact that the LP has the word summer in it's title just makes it a must have on the average human beings summer playlist. It makes perfect sense if you think about it! Rather, this blend of electronic samples and funky guitar riffs makes for a unique lo-fi listening experience. Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm have created songs that make you feel like you've been transported to a jungle void, while others such as Bejan and S.A.W. simply make you smile. Their sound and rhythm are totally their own, an infusion of African beats, California attitude, New York swagger, Latin forwardness, its all there. Don't get me wrong, <i>This Town Needs Guns </i>is an amazing experimental 4 piece band with obvious influences from <i>Minus the Bear </i>and sometimes even flares of <i>The Mars Volta </i>but there is just something mesmerizing about this tune that makes me wish Chris had a side project of his own.Joshuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11453421474316774147noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630633191671731243.post-73350698515895971092010-06-25T21:41:00.000-07:002010-06-27T20:27:43.496-07:00Of Montreal<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/ofmontreal__.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 500px;" src="http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/ofmontreal__.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Of Montreal has always been a solid and very fun band to listen to. You don’t hear of Orlando as a huge upcoming band scene but these boys break the mold. What Henrietta offers is paramount experimental music that is easily digested. It doesn’t take much to really get into them, but once you do, they offer all the lore involved with bands like Minus the Bear and Tera Melos. It’s very refreshing listening to a song like “Labor and Rest” with riffs reminiscent to Mew that are simply delightful to be listening to through a different interpretation. Check out their <a href="http://www.myspace.com/henriettafl">myspace</a></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"> and give these guys a good listen.</span></span></span>Joshuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11453421474316774147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630633191671731243.post-7283989960507476462010-06-21T19:42:00.000-07:002010-06-27T19:15:59.263-07:00Yukon Blonde<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2703/4211801415_92a9c1b56f.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 333px;" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2703/4211801415_92a9c1b56f.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Yukon Blonde features a cohesive sound that takes you on an adventure through nature. There really isn't anything better to listen to during an afternoon thunderstorm in the humid depths of Florida like "Wind Blows" or "Kumiko Song". What I really love about this group is that the music is really poignant. When I listen to the lyrics of a song like "Babies Don't Like Blue Anymore", it delivers such incredible tenderness to the mind and body alike. Yukon Blonde deserves a permanent spot on anyones playlist. I was also lucky enough to get into contact with Brandon (the strapping young lad in the center of this picture) and he was kind enough to answer a few questions for me. Upon asking him what his favorite part of being on tour was he responded with this: </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">"The b</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">est part of tour is seeing new cities every night, playing with other great bands, sleeping on random couches, [and] meeting new people. Playing to a packed crowd makes it all worth it, we are entertainers, so when you have a full room, it makes you push your show that much more. We do our best to keep the show involved with the crowd. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:arial;font-size:small;">Also, to see people singing along with our songs is such a great feeling too, specially when you have never been to that particular city." </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:arial;font-size:small;">If there were ever a band that I would recommend to anyone, it would be Yukon Blonde. It isn't often that every song on an album is brilliant but Jeff, Graham, and Brandon managed this infrequent feat.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:arial;font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21597632&style=wood&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21597632&style=wood&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21597633&style=wood&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21597633&style=wood&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></span></div>Joshuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11453421474316774147noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630633191671731243.post-26768476805479932592010-06-19T22:18:00.000-07:002010-06-27T19:14:54.743-07:00Good Old War<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.baronbanner.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/good-old-war.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 550px; height: 367px;" src="http://www.baronbanner.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/good-old-war.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Keith Goodwin, Dan Schwartz, and Tim Arnold certainly make an accomplished trio straight out of Pennsylvania. I just got back from their show and to put this simply, Keith is quite possibly one of the coolest dudes I've ever met. Such a down to earth guy with such a passion for music it would be impossible not to respect. Dan also showed me a great time as we danced the night away and sang along to Yukon Blonde as they were jamming out. So we were having a blast before it was time for them to go on and then the night only got better. You see, the thing about Good Old War is that no matter how you look at it, they sound so incredible live, you sit there wishing they were performing in front of you while listening to their album at home. They put on one of the best shows I've ever seen hands down and I can't wait to see them again. Good Old War is quite simply some of the best folk music out right now. They dont bother with extravagant melodies to portray their thoughts through song, rather they stick to the basics and they do a ravishing job. There is absolutely no excuse to pass these guys up. They'll show you a grand time and then serenade you all night with some of the most pulchritudinous music you'll ever hear. Do yourself a favor and check out their <a href="http://goodoldwar.com/tour/">tour dates.</a></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21575948&style=wood&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21575948&style=wood&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><object width="250" height="40"> <param name="movie" value="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf"> <param name="wmode" value="window"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> <param name="flashvars" value="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21575936&style=wood&p=0"> <embed src="http://listen.grooveshark.com/songWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="40" flashvars="hostname=cowbell.grooveshark.com&widgetID=21575936&style=wood&p=0" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="window"></embed> </object></span></span></div>Joshuahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11453421474316774147noreply@blogger.com0
